Donald E. Bonjour Elementary School
The Donald E. Bonjour Elementary School staff, students and PTA celebrated the current school building's 50th anniversary in May of 2004, but the school actually traces its beginning to the 1800s.
In 1868, Lenexa School District #46 paid $20 for about one acre of land just west of Pflumm and 99th Street for the community's first public school. The second building to serve as the Lenexa school (pictured bottom left) was built later in the 1800s on what now is the Lenexa Community Center 's north parking lot. It was in service until 1908 when the third building was erected on what now is the south portion of the parking lot at the Community Center. The fourth and current building first opened for the 1953-54 school year.
District #46 became part of Shawnee Mission School District #512 in 1969. Information indicates that the school's name was changed to Donald E. Bonjour Elementary at that time. |
