Who will win Lenexa Star Quest?
Singing contest is part of Lenexa’s 100th anniversary events
The search for the best singers in town is set for Friday, May 11 at the Lenexa 100th Anniversary Celebration event—Lenexa Star Quest.
The event will be held at St. James Academy in Lenexa at 24505 Prairie Star Parkway. The show starts at 7 p.m.; doors open at 6 p.m. (Open seating; all tickets are $2 each. Tickets must be purchased in advance at the Lenexa Community Center, or the information booth at Lenexa 100 celebration events.)
The judges have searched the city and found 15 of the finest vocalists in town. The competition was open to all Lenexa residents, as well as the people (and their families) who work in Lenexa. Entrants were required to perform without music on the opening day of auditions in front of a panel of three judges. All of the judges are members of the greater Kansas City music and arts community of experts, and they adhered to strict, fair guidelines for evaluating performance and presentation, according to Susan Blattner, event coordinator.
The field was reduced to 34 performers for a second round of tryouts – this time with their musical accompaniment. Contestants were allowed to showcase their talents with a different song than they performed on the opening day of auditions, and that song and music are the mandatory selections for the show night.
“Our entertainers are great, and everyone is in for a professional caliber show,” said Keith Winterhalter, Lenexa 100 committee volunteer.
Master of ceremonies for the Lenexa Star Quest is Joel Nichols, KMBC-TV 9 FirstNews weather anchor.
“Our judges are committed to fairly evaluating the performers on technical merit, showmanship, and entertainment. We’re not set up to let the audience vote – but show up and let your voice and applause be heard by your favorites. These 15 finalists are all so talented, you’ll have trouble picking your top three,” Winterhalter said.
Each age group will have a grand prize winner, who will receive a prize package including a satin Lenexa Star Quest jacket, $250, coupons and certificates for uniquely Lenexa treats that totals well over $750, according to Blattner.
Contestants also will be brought back for another performance at the Lenexa 100 Taste of Lenexa Street Fair on Saturday, May 12 at Old Town Lenexa.
