Lenexa 100 th Anniversary Band Concert in the Park
Presented in Partnership with the Lenexa U.S. Army Recruiting Station

Big band music will fill the park Monday night when the 1 st Infantry Division Stage Band from Ft. Riley , Kan. performs a special concert in celebration of Lenexa 's 100 th anniversary.

This exciting 20-piece big band will help celebrate Lenexa 's centennial and show support for America 's soldiers with a free concert by the lake in Sar-Ko-Par Park at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 7. The concert, under the direction of Sgt. Allen Freeman, will feature the vocal stylings of Sgt. Renata Draper, and will include swinging, big band arrangements from favorite artists like Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Doc Severinsen, the Dorsey Brothers, and many more.

The band was formed in October 1943 in the Regular Army as the Headquarters and Headquarters company band for the 1st Infantry Division, famously known as The Big Red One.  Since its activation it has spent most of its existence at Ft. Riley , KS , with deployments during World War II , Vietnam , and Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

Over the last decade, the band has served with distinction while “forward deployed” in Germany to promote German/American relations, as well as bettering diplomacy with United States' allies all over Europe. It has also served in places of turmoil such as Hungary , Macedonia , Bosnia , Kosovo, and most recently Operation Iraqi Freedom II.

Concertgoers are reminded to bring their lawn chairs, blankets and their own snacks and refreshments to best enjoy this outdoor experience.

(In case of rain, concert will be at the National Guard Armory, 18200 W. 87th St. Parkway)
